Angels...God's Secret Service.
Maybe it's me. Maybe it's our culture. I haven't heard much mention lately of angels. You don't hear homilies about them, nor are their delineations part of the local religious education classes. Why are these messengers of the Lord rarely mentioned, or their care invoked anymore? Personally I have always been partial to archangels, especially Gabriel. I grew up in a parish named in honor of Saint Gabriel, have worked in the telecommunications industry for years (Gabriel is the patron saint of (tele)communications workers!) and have always held him in high esteem. When I invoke the intercession of Gabriel the Archangel it is usually when I am expecting something important in the mail (He is patron of postal workers as well), and it usually involves my reception of money. Of course there are times when I plead that Saint Gabriel will slow down the mail, especially when I write checks, but that is an entirely different story! When I was a child, I recited the familiar, Angel of God, my guardian dearprayer, watched Clarence guide Jimmy Stewart through Midwestern America's, It's a Wonderful Life, and even remember the prayer after Mass which invoked another angelic heavy hitter, Saint Michael the Archangel.

Buddhism began with one man, Gotama Shakyamuni, who lived 2,550 years ago in Northern India. He had an experience of Awakening, and was called The Awakened One, The Buddha. During his life, a community of like-minded people numbered in the tens of thousands learned from him and shared his ideas and the practice of meditation. That community, called the Sangha, included men and women, monks, nuns, and laypeople, kings who sought peace and reformed criminals.

All types of people wake up in a world that they have not created nor defined. We find ourselves in a world, in a time, in a certain place that influences and shapes us. We all want answers. We want to understand the purpose of all this. While we all may be sincere in seeking this answer, we do not all arrive at the same conclusion. This leads one to wonder...

A "ghost story" is quite different than a horror story, a fantasy, or an adventure, although the latter three may often involve ghosts. The classic ghost story maintains a mood of suspense and mystery with a touch of drama. More importantly, it exhibits an eerie verisimilitude by using a set of events that are almost plausible in order to tell a supernatural tale. A classic ghost story leaves us jumping at noises and feeling nervous in the dark as a part of the mind wonders if a haunting encounter could happen.

A couple of weeks ago, my adopted Auntie Annie passed away after an open heart surgery. She used to live in the same town were I now live, but had to move to another state about a year ago. I have not spoken to her since the day that she left when she came to pick up some baked goods that I made for her trip. I did not make her favorite empanada, because they were driving and it will spoil before they get to their destination. I promised myself that I will make them when one of her family member is going to go down to visit her.

I had a dream last night that my time on earth had ended. I was standing in front of God and I was not ready to go. So many things left unsaid and undone. I begged for just one more day, just one more chance. God spoke to me and said, "My son, you have had a lifetime to do the things you wanted, and say the things you should have, but I will grant you one more day on earth. It will be done my way."

So the true Definition of a Spiritual Warrior is someone who has declared a personal war for Spiritual values and Love. By declaring war, I don't mean in the external world. The Spiritual Warrior fights his/her battles on the inside, unless there is a true need to go externally and then it is done with true love and strategy.

The horoscopes that you find in any local daily newspaper work pretty simply. They are based on the premise that we each have a Zodiac or "sun" sign that is based on our birth date. You can find your Zodiac or "sun" sign on the chart below by finding which date range your birthday falls into. Keep in mind that the dates are off by a day or two depending on what horoscope source you read, but they are generally as follows:
ARIES 3/21-4/19 TAURUS 4/20-5/20 GEMINI 5/21-6/20 CANCER 6/21-7/22 LEO 7/23-8/22 VIRGO 8/23-9/22 LIBRA 9/23-10/22 SCORPIO 10/23-11/21 SAGITTARIUS 11/22-12/21 CAPRICORN 12/22-1/19 AQUARIUS 1/20-2/18 PISCES 1/19-3/20

Religion and feminism are not something that people often connect, but with the spate of holidays that come up this time of year, I realized that many feminists find their voices and take action because of their religious beliefs. Last week, I wrote about Jewish feminists in honor of Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year. In honor of Ramadan, I'd like to highlight the work of a few contemporary Muslim feminists.

The claim that neither religion or atheism is right, is on its surface, a fair pronouncement, that somehow you can weigh one logically against the other and each is equally preferable. But when you dig a bit, you realize it is a hollow claim. It is a claim that presupposes an equal footing, between religion and atheism. Therefore, one cannot disprove the religious position and thus, one has to hold just as much faith that there is no God; as a theist holds that there is. Let us 'dig' in, to see why the claim is a poor one.
