Emo, short for “emotional”, is a phrase that is very descriptive of the music itself. Emotionally charged and raw, Emo’s musical roots began in 1983 after the band Minor Threat broke up. The Emo look and feel, however, is still going strong. So much so in fact, that it is today a cultural phenomenon that few adults understand.

During the Paris shows I kept noting the number of variations on the chic black dress. It wasn’t hard. There were those three killer examples from Balenciaga, the ribbon dresses at Lanvin, and a softly draped number from Louis Vuitton with black embroidery around the neckline that suggested (to me) barbed wire. I think Junya Watanabe’s jersey dresses count, too.

I had plans–plans I tell you!–to be up early and roaming the town but my pillow snatched me back and it was past noon before I set off to the Place de la Concorde, already crowded with people. It was a stunning day, cloudless and mild. The first show for most of the editors and buyers was Balmain (the tightest, smallest pants and club tops in leather and metal mesh, nothing surprising) and a number of the guests had brought their young children. In the course of the day I heard a lot of things. Will Robert Rimondi and Tommaso Aquilano of 6267 take over Ferre? Is Hedi Slimane in negotiations for his own men’s and women’s label? Time will tell. I thought Slimane’s pictures (in New York Magazine) of Carine Roitfeld were terrific, and evocative of her. And take a look at the spreads with Lara Stone in the current Paris Vogue, particularly Neo Classiques, by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott.

EVER since she went off to college I’ve come to think of my daughter as Virtual Zoe. In many ways, there’s not that much difference between my glimpses of her now and the brief physical sightings in the years after she earned her driver’s license. But these days, I never know where she will turn up. It could be in the form of an e-mail message — “Check out this sweet car I saw for sale on Craigslist” — or when I’m trying to work and an instant message pops up: Oh, come on, it’s sooooo cheappppp (for a car). Or she might write a blog post about her most recent purchase, a long-handled “claw” that extends her arm reach by nearly three feet so she can grab her phone without getting off her bed or (if later than noon) the common-room couch.

FOR runners training to run 26.2 miles in one of the 90-plus marathons in the United States this fall, the brutally hot and humid weather of last Sunday’s Chicago Marathon was a reminder of the most vicious opponent in the sport: Mother Nature. And while it is unlikely that the New York City Marathon on Nov. 4, or other late-autumn efforts like Philadelphia’s on Nov. 18 and Atlanta’s on Nov. 22, will suffer the same extreme conditions as Chicago’s, longer summers and warming weather trends mean that athletes should start planning to beat the heat, not just the clock.

GIVEN the contempt that has been directed toward President Nicolas Sarkozy by his countrymen for appearing to be excessively pro-American, and the weakness of the dollar against the euro, it is strange that no one here made much fuss about Parisian designers who practically saluted Old Glory with their stars-and-stripes collections shown last week.

It seems like everyone has a tattoo these days. What used to be the property of sailors, outlaws, and biker gangs is now a popular body decoration for many people. And it's not just anchors, skulls, and battleships anymore — from school emblems to Celtic designs to personalized symbols, people have found many ways to express themselves with their tattoos. Maybe you've thought about getting one. But before you head down to the nearest tattoo shop and roll up your sleeve, there are a few things you need to know.

Can hair become sunburned? Your hair may feel "fried" after a day at the beach but hair can’t technically burn because it’s not alive. Sun exposure will, however, damage your hair’s natural protective film. According to a study by the Renee Furterer Research Center, after just three days of sun exposure, the scale-like cells that cover each individual hair shaft begin to pull off. This makes your hair dry, dull, fragile and brittle. Choose hair products containing sunscreen since hair can suffer damaging effects from the sun if not well-protected.

A few months ago, I used a hair curling cream, which has been standing in the back of my beauty shelf for years. I applied it right away since it was one of my favorites. But when my strands didn't do any of the things promised on the bottle: de-frizz, add shine, create curls — I realized I'd had it for four years.
